Kevin Skies talks about songwriting, giving his best, inspiring people and more

Kevin Skies is a Montreal based musician. The best part about Kevin's music is so personal and something that everyone can relate to. I was lucky to get a chance to interview him and go on his musical journey.

How did the whole process of being Kevin Skies the singer/songwriter/pop artist start?
Well it’s kind of a funny story originally I was in a punk band called Turning Skies. After a while some of the members had lost interest in music and I only knew how to play, not really much I could do alone so I had pretty much isolated myself in my room learning guitar and how to sing. After months and months of failure I was making progress even now I still am. It took me hundred takes for recording  "Trapped Inside Us"  and it takes me one take now to get a even better take.

During the process of music making which part of it is the hardest and which part of it comes very naturally to you?

Well sometimes it varies because I have a tendency to write songs that are too hard for me vocally or guitar wise. All around it’s difficult and takes time especially writing songs that involve your fears or secrets because you are basically putting yourself out there and it can be hard to find the right words to describe your feelings or past.

Out of all the songs you have written which one is the closest to your heart?
On “Trapped Inside Us” it would probably be Soldier. Yes it is a long song and somewhat tedious but it truly envelops my past in a song and I really put every bit of my emotion when I play that song live and hopefully it will someday be redone.

While writing songs what is that you aim for?

When I write it’s just to get things off my chest once a song is on paper it is truly a load off my mind and just all that negative energy is just put somewhere else.If a few people can relate and feel better knowing somebody else is going through the same problems that’s great.

If we scroll through your playlist which songs will be find on repeat?
Paper Wings - Rise Against
Sold - Dan Mangen
stepping stones - CatchingYourClouds
Skipping Stones - Transit
The Thespian - Alesana
The Balcony Scene - Pierce The Veil
And much more :)

One song that comes to your mind that defines you?
Definitely Sexting by Blood On The Dance Floor! kidding kidding but I really do not know.

Which are the artist that you wish to see yourself performing with?
Sunroof
SayWeCanFly
CatchingYourClouds
Transit
The Ready Set

How has social media been able to help you when it comes to your music?
Without Social Media I would had like 10 Fans. I have been able to use it to reach much more people than I ever could alone.

Tell us about this one moment or an incident that made you feel that all the time and energy that you invest in is all worth it?

Well I constantly get messages from people saying that my music has helped them in one way or another. I love seeing my music has impacted and helped people  but currently I have lost over 5000$ to recording and I understand that is not much to the lifetime of musicians but at my age and situation it is hard to carry this burden on my own and receive no compensation.

Few years down the line where do you wish to see your self?
Warped Tour :)

What are the projects that you are working on?
Well I just released my Second EP “The Distance” and am working on a few collabs and another random acoustic EP before my full length.

Airport Romance- Chapter three

This is the moment I know I should say something to her something that would make her feel better, but I am out of words. It is so refreshing to see someone who is so in touch with her emotions. “God, here I am telling you my life story and I don’t even know anything about you. So what are you running from?” saying this her switch has worked again, there is a massive smile on her face and the spark is coming back. “I am running from my work, same old boring story.” “It cannot be that bad, what do you work as?” “ I am an actor.” “An actor, I haven’t met one before, are you any good.” “ Decent, I have a few fans here and there.” “Give me you phone.” “Oh okay, here you go.” I am not sure what she is looking for, but I can see her trying to google something. “You call yourself decent? God how many awards have you won?” “I have  a long way to go trust me.” There it is again she knows I am an actor and just like everyone else she is going to act all weird now. “Lon

Airport Romance- Chapter 8

Kimberly  Marcus has been gone for over an hour now and he still hasn’t called, in the mean time my friends have arrived. Laura and I have been childhood friends and neighbours when we were young. Her father decided to move to Beverly Hills when we were 10, but she got her way and still continued to go to the same school as before which is one of the reasons we have been friends for so long. We  ended up going to the same high school and later she went to Paris for an art course. She now organises art exhibits for established artist , I must say nothing has changed about her she is still head to toe covered with branded clothes though what I like about her is she is super down to earth so wearing a Gucci bag which cost half of peoples monthly wage hasn’t turned her into a snob. Laura’s younger sister Karen and I known each other since I can remember. Laura had stayed over at our place the night her mother was in labour with Karen, I have seen Karen grow in front of my eyes, but w

Dublin's Musical Talet: Jake Suleman

Dublin is one of the most musically sound country  that I have ever visited. If you ever visit Dublin have to visit Temple Bar, the place is so musically sound that it will make you fall in love with it.  Dublin is the place where I came across one of the most amazing and versatile singer till date Jake Suleman. The vocal strength that  Jake is blessed with is unbelievable, he can hit some really high notes and so effortlessly that it will leave you amazed.  Jake has an amazing strength to keep his audience at their toes, his music helps him connect with audience of all ages. How much I saw Jake looks musically sounds because he ended up playing every dedication that was made that evening.  He played my dedication "All of Me" by John Legend, needless to say he was absolutely flawless his ability to give his own personal touch to each song that he plays makes him stand out.  Check him out: https://www.facebook.com/jakesuleman88/videos/647966355304067/ You can conne
